Sustainable packaging solutions
Environmentally friendly corrugated cardboard packaging since 1949
Sustainability is a key purchasing criterion.
Environmentally-aware consumers appreciate the value of sustainable packaging and associate this positively with the brand. Furthermore, sustainable packaging solutions enable us to reduce our environmental impact to a minimum in many different ways. This means you can also rely on environmentally-friendly packaging to convince your customers and also achieve your sustainability goals!
Sustainable packaging in the circular economy
At THIMM we design our business processes to be environmentally-friendly and sustainable. Therefore, we focus very closely on the recyclability of our products. This is why most of our sustainable packaging is made from corrugated cardboard. This natural recyclable product is produced from renewable raw materials and consists largely of recycled fibres. The additional fresh fibres required are obtained from windfall and thinning timber, a result of sustainable forest management.
Unavoidable production residues (scraps, paper dust, etc.) that occur during the production of corrugated cardboard are also returned to the reusable material cycle. This generally occurs at THIMM in co-operation with our paper suppliers. This optimises logistics since the wastepaper is collected at the same time as the deliveries of the raw paper, thus avoiding empty journeys.
Perfect paper cycle
After use, the sustainable packaging produced by THIMM is almost all returned to the reusable material cycle by our customers in both the consumer and industrial goods sectors.
This return closes the cycle since the wastepaper is used again in the paper factories as a raw material for paper production. A paper fibre can go through up to 20 life cycles before it can no longer be used for paper production.
Safe and sustainable shipping
Security locks also offer protection from damage. Locking systems made from sustainable corrugated cardboard are an ecological alternative to adhesive strips. The security locks protect shipping packaging from unauthorised opening and give you security against manipulations and counterfeits. Packaging designs of secondary packaging with an integrated locking system are the optimum solution to protect your products.
Legal framework for packaging and packaging waste
The two most important legal bases are the German Packaging Act (VerpackG) and the valid EU directive. The Packaging Act forms the basis for a successful circular economy for sustainable packaging. This officially came into force on 1.1.2019 as a binding legal framework replacing the previous packaging regulation. In the meantime, the Packaging Act has been partially supplemented and/or overhauled (lastly in mid-2021) and from July 2022 registration requirements will also apply to the ultimate distributors of service packaging.
The current applicable EU Directive primarily includes measures to avoid packaging waste and promotes the reuse and recycling of packaging waste. These measures are intended to protect both resources and human health, ensure a functioning internal market and thereby contribute sustainably to the circular economy in EU Member States.
